Zcash’s New Zakura Common Cuts Private Transaction Time to Under 200 Milliseconds

Zcash’s Zakura team has released Zakura Common, a suite of cryptographic software that slashes private transaction creation time from over three seconds to under 200 milliseconds. The upgrade, announced on August 31, 2026, dramatically accelerates shielded transactions — the privacy-preserving transfers that conceal sender, receiver, and amount — by streamlining the heavy computation required before sending.

According to the team, the new libraries speed up mobile wallet processing by more than 14 times and desktop by over 5 times. Hashing is 21 times faster, and node verification is up to 8 times quicker. Zcash cofounder Sean Bowe confirmed that both shielded wallets and full nodes using Zakura Common benefit from the improvements.

Why Zcash Transactions Were Slow

Zcash’s shielded transactions rely on zk-SNARKs (zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive arguments of knowledge) to prove the validity of a transaction without revealing its details. This cryptographic proof generation is computationally intensive, historically causing noticeable delays when sending private transactions.

Zakura Common addresses this bottleneck by optimizing the underlying cryptographic operations. The software is already integrated into Zakura’s 1.3.0 release and the Vizor Wallet, and the libraries are available as open source for immediate adoption by other wallet developers.

The release is part of Zakura’s broader roadmap to scale Zcash to 50,000 transactions per second, a target that would position the privacy-focused cryptocurrency as a viable option for high-throughput applications.

Implications for Zcash Users and Developers

For everyday users, the most noticeable change is speed: sending a private Zcash transaction will now feel nearly instant on mobile devices, removing a key friction point that previously pushed some users toward transparent transactions or other privacy coins.

For developers, the open-source nature of Zakura Common means wallets and services can integrate the libraries without waiting for a network-level upgrade. This lowers the barrier to offering shielded transactions and could accelerate adoption of Zcash’s privacy features across the broader crypto ecosystem.

The performance gains also strengthen Zcash’s position in a competitive privacy coin market, where transaction speed and user experience are critical differentiators. While Zcash has long been praised for its strong privacy guarantees, its slower transaction times have been a recurring criticism. Zakura Common directly addresses that weakness.

Looking ahead, the team’s 50,000 TPS target suggests that further optimizations are in the pipeline. If achieved, Zcash could become one of the fastest privacy-preserving blockchains, potentially attracting institutional and enterprise interest in private payment solutions.
