Why is USDT more expensive in India?
USDT is designed to track the US dollar, so outside India it trades very close to $1. On Indian exchanges it is bought and sold for rupees in its own market, and that market usually sits above the official dollar rate. The gap is often called the India premium. It changes with demand: when more people want to move rupees into crypto, buyers bid USDT up; when demand cools, the gap narrows. The cost and friction of moving rupees onto an exchange, exchange fees and the tax treatment of crypto in India are also priced in by traders.
The premium matters when you convert. Buying USDT at a premium of several per cent and later selling it when the premium is smaller is a loss even if USDT itself stays at $1.
What is USDT?
USDT (Tether) is a stablecoin issued by Tether. Each token aims to stay worth one US dollar, backed by reserves the company holds. It runs on several blockchains, including Tron and Ethereum, and is the most traded stablecoin. Check which network an exchange supports before you deposit or withdraw: sending USDT on the wrong network can mean losing it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of 1 USDT in INR today?
The live price on Indian exchanges is shown at the top of this page, next to the official US dollar rate. Both refresh every five minutes.
Why is the USDT price different on CoinDCX and WazirX?
Each exchange has its own order book, so the last traded price depends on the buyers and sellers on that platform. Differences of a few tenths of a rupee are normal.
Is USDT always worth $1?
It aims to be. Against the dollar it usually trades within a fraction of a cent of $1, but it has briefly moved away from that level in stressed markets. In rupees it follows the Indian exchange price, not the official rate.
