LSE and Kraken to Tokenize 100 UK Stocks via xStocks Platform

London Stock Exchange building with digital blockchain overlay representing tokenized stocks

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) and Kraken’s parent company Payward have announced a partnership to tokenize the 100 largest UK-listed companies through the xStocks framework. The tokens, backed 1:1 by the underlying shares, will allow eligible investors in more than 110 countries to trade around the clock.

The announcement, made on September 1, 2026, marks a significant step toward integrating blockchain technology into mainstream equity markets. The first xStocks are expected to go live within weeks, with LSE planning to list them on its LSE 24 venue in 2027, pending regulatory approval.

How xStocks Will Work

Under the partnership, each xStock token will represent direct ownership of a share in one of the UK’s top 100 companies. The tokens will be issued on a blockchain and can be traded 24/7, unlike traditional stock exchanges that operate during set hours.

Eligible investors in over 110 countries will be able to access these tokens, potentially broadening participation in UK equities. The move builds on LSE’s earlier exploration of blockchain-based trading infrastructure, which began with a pilot project announced in 2023.

What This Means for the Market

This partnership signals growing institutional interest in tokenized securities. By applying Kraken’s established exchange infrastructure and LSE’s regulatory credibility, the initiative could pave the way for more traditional assets to be traded on blockchain networks.

Industry observers note that tokenization could reduce settlement times, lower costs, and increase market accessibility. However, regulatory hurdles remain, particularly around cross-border trading and investor protections.

The LSE 24 venue, which is expected to host these tokens, will operate as a 24-hour trading platform. The exchange has said it will work closely with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to ensure compliance with UK securities laws.

This is not the first foray into tokenized assets for either company. Kraken has previously supported trading in tokenized stocks through its platform, while LSE has been exploring blockchain technology for several years. The partnership is seen as a natural progression of their respective strategies.

As the launch date approaches, market participants will be watching closely to see how the tokens are priced, how they interact with traditional settlement systems, and whether other exchanges follow suit.
