Crypto Market Today: Bitcoin Holds $69,500 as Ethereum Steadies Above $3,300
Bitcoin held near $69,500 on July 29, trading within a tight range as the broader crypto market consolidated ahead of the Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting beginning Tuesday. Ethereum remained above $3,300, showing relative stability after a week of muted price action.
The total crypto market capitalization stood at roughly $2.55 trillion, with Bitcoin dominance hovering near 52% — a level not seen since early 2021 — as traders favored the largest cryptocurrency over altcoins amid a period of macroeconomic uncertainty.

Fed Decision and ETF Flows Drive Sentiment

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is widely expected to hold interest rates steady at its July 30-31 meeting, according to CME FedWatch data, which shows a 96% probability of no change. However, traders will scrutinize Chair Jerome Powell’s post-meeting remarks for any signal about a potential rate cut in September.
Lower interest rates typically benefit risk assets like cryptocurrencies by reducing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding investments. A dovish tone from the Fed could provide a catalyst for Bitcoin to test the $70,000 resistance level, which it briefly touched but failed to hold over the weekend.

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have also been a key driver of recent price action. Data from CoinDesk shows net inflows of approximately $535 million over the past week, signaling sustained institutional demand. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has been the primary beneficiary, accounting for a significant portion of those flows.
Ethereum and Altcoins Remain in Bitcoin’s Shadow
Ethereum’s price action has been relatively subdued compared to Bitcoin, with ETH/BTC ratio declining to around 0.047 — its lowest level since April 2021. Analysts attribute this to a lack of immediate catalysts for Ethereum, as the market awaits clearer regulatory guidance on spot Ethereum ETFs in the U.S.
Among altcoins, Solana (SOL) saw modest gains of 2% on the day, trading near $175, while BNB Chain’s BNB was flat at $580. The broader altcoin market, as measured by the OTHERS index (excluding the top 10 cryptocurrencies), showed minimal movement, reflecting the market’s current focus on Bitcoin-centric narratives.
What to Watch This Week
Beyond the Fed decision, traders are monitoring several key events. The U.S. Treasury’s quarterly refunding announcement on July 31 could influence broader market liquidity conditions. Additionally, the July jobs report, due August 2, will provide further clues on the health of the labor market and the trajectory of Fed policy.
On the crypto-specific front, the market is watching for any updates on the SEC’s pending decisions regarding spot Ethereum ETF applications from firms like VanEck and Franklin Templeton, with final deadlines approaching in August. A favorable ruling could shift momentum back toward ETH and the broader altcoin market.
For now, Bitcoin remains the center of gravity, with its ability to hold above $69,000 seen as a bullish signal by many traders. A decisive break above $70,000 could open the door to retesting the all-time high near $73,700 set in March.
