XRP Rich List Data Shows Top 50 Wallets Control Over 43% of Circulating Supply
Blockchain data from the XRP Ledger shows a stark concentration of wealth, with the top 50 wallet addresses controlling between 43% and 45% of the total circulating XRP supply. The figures, drawn from the ledger’s native rich list and analytics firm Santiment, highlight a structural gap between a small cohort of large holders and millions of retail accounts that hold negligible amounts of the token.
As of early 2026, the XRP Ledger has surpassed 7.85 million activated addresses, up from roughly 4.5 million in 2023. Yet the distribution of tokens across those accounts remains heavily skewed. More than 4 million accounts hold between zero and 20 XRP, while a further 2.55 million accounts hold between 20 and 500 XRP. At the other end of the spectrum, just 8,053 accounts hold at least 275,026 XRP, placing them in the top 0.1% of holders.

Institutions and Exchanges Dominate the Upper Tiers

The concentration metrics are heavily influenced by institutional players rather than individual investors. Ripple Labs remains the largest single entity on the ledger, overseeing tens of billions of tokens in locked escrow accounts and corporate treasuries. The company has used a smart contract-based escrow system since 2017, releasing one billion XRP per month, with any unused portion returned to escrow to maintain predictable supply.
Centralized exchanges also distort the rich list rankings. Major platforms such as Binance, UPbit, and Bithumb hold customer deposits in large aggregated wallets, meaning a single address can represent the combined funds of thousands of retail users. This aggregation inflates the apparent size of individual whale accounts and shifts the thresholds for top-tier rankings.

Co-founder Chris Larsen also maintains significant on-chain token allocations in personal wallets, further concentrating the upper echelons of the rich list. The result is that corporate insiders and institutional custodians, rather than organic market participants, define the top-tier account thresholds.
What the Concentration Gap Means for Market Liquidity
The high level of supply concentration creates distinct liquidity conditions for XRP traders. When a small number of wallets control a large portion of the float, order books can become thinner, increasing the likelihood of sudden price swings. Large institutional holders trading against retail participants operate under different constraints, often executing block trades that can move the market.
This dynamic has fueled ongoing debates about whether high token concentration undermines the XRP Ledger’s decentralization goals. However, the network’s consensus mechanism is insulated from wealth distribution. Unlike Proof of Work systems, the XRPL uses a Federated Consensus model where independent validators process transactions without holding a financial stake, meaning concentrated ownership does not directly affect network security.
Despite the dominance of whales, retail participation continues to grow. Data from Santiment shows the cohort of wallets holding 1 million or more XRP added 32 new addresses in the three months leading up to August 2026, even as the token’s market cap declined by 29%. This suggests large-holder accumulation is occurring during a period of weak price performance.
Traders increasingly monitor whale address movements through public ledger tracking tools to anticipate market shifts. The transparency of the XRP Ledger allows analysts to review the rich list in real time, watching for large transfers that often precede volatility.
Looking ahead, the continued expansion of regulated financial products could push more tokens into institutional custody wallets, further consolidating the top tiers. As custody providers accumulate XRP on behalf of clients, the rich list metrics will increasingly reflect institutional flows rather than individual wealth. For market participants, understanding who holds the supply remains a critical lens for interpreting price action and liquidity conditions.
