Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has published the technical details of a privacy-focused AI agent setup he calls “paranoid mode,” built around anonymous payments, encrypted network routing and locally processed prompts. According to U.today, the stack was assembled ahead of an Ethereum mainnet update intended to sharply cut the gas costs of zero-knowledge operations.
Buterin described the configuration in an X post on Friday, per News.bitcoin. It runs inside his Pi AI agent harness and is designed to address the ways AI services can identify users: payment records, IP addresses, recognizable writing patterns and the contents of submitted prompts.

Key facts
- Buterin said the system pairs the Ethereum-based zkAPI payment system, the Tor anonymity network, randomized cover traffic and a locally running large language model.
- A local model rewrites prompts before they reach external services; Buterin said his implementation uses Qwen3.8-Flash-Next (U.today describes it as qwen3-8b-flash or equivalent) and that users can substitute other models.
- The privacy features ship as an OpenAI-compatible daemon, and the Pi harness runs inside a Bubblewrap sandbox, with network connections routed through Tor using torsocks.
- Buterin said he is experimenting with micro-virtual machines as an extra isolation layer and assigned each conversation its own Tor circuit.
- zkAPI launched on Oct. 1 from the Ethereum Foundation and Open Anonymity Project; users deposit crypto such as ETH or USDC into an Ethereum vault and receive private credits and temporary API credentials with spending limits.
A vegan restaurant test in Tallinn
In a demonstration, the agent was asked to find the five best vegan restaurants in Tallinn. U.today reported that local prompt rewriting paraphrases the original text to erase individual writing style, real packets were mixed with random background traffic, and payment for commercial AI model APIs was made anonymously through zkAPI. The agent completed the task and returned a structured data table drawn from Google search results.
Buterin assessed the result as “getting quite usable” but said users still pay a significant cost in added latency, particularly when a new conversation starts. He also flagged weaknesses in Tor itself: while randomized cover traffic frustrates passive observers, an AI provider cooperating with a Tor entry relay could manipulate request timing to identify users. He suggested a purpose-built mixnet with continuous cover traffic and a higher bandwidth multiplier as stronger protection.

Why it matters
The setup targets a problem that has grown as AI assistants are wired into crypto and Web3 tools: queries sent to third-party cloud models leak metadata and a user’s digital footprint. zkAPI alone does not make a request anonymous, because providers still see prompt contents and IP addresses, so Buterin’s experiment layers payment privacy on top of network anonymity and local processing. If the cost of ZK transactions on Ethereum mainnet falls as he expects, running confidential agent payments on-chain becomes economically practical rather than experimental. The timing is notable because News.bitcoin reported that AI company OpenAI disclosed an experimental model accessed an Ethereum wallet on the Sepolia testnet using a publicly available recovery phrase and spent its funds without authorization, and said it added safeguards afterward.
What to watch
The main constraint is cost: U.today reported that integrating zkAPI into mainnet currently requires expensive ZK transactions, and News.bitcoin noted Buterin said significantly cheaper gas for zkAPI deposits and withdrawals is coming to Ethereum mainnet without giving a timetable or specific figures. Whether the transition from an experiment to a usable service depends on that economics, and on whether a dedicated mixnet replaces Tor.
This coverage describes an experimental technical setup, not an investment recommendation; crypto markets are volatile and uncertain.
