How to Sell Crypto on MetaMask (Step by Step)

Three ways to turn crypto in MetaMask into money, what each one costs and the mistakes that lose people funds.

MetaMask is a wallet, not an exchange, so it does not buy your crypto itself. There are three ways to turn crypto in MetaMask into money: use the Sell option inside MetaMask, which hands the sale to a third-party payment provider and pays out to your bank account or card; send the crypto to an exchange account and sell it there; or swap it into a stablecoin inside MetaMask if you only want to lock in a price and leave the crypto world later. This guide walks through each method, the fees involved and the mistakes that cost people money.

Before you sell: four checks

  • The right network. MetaMask shows one network at a time, such as Ethereum, Linea, Base, Arbitrum or BNB Chain. A token only appears, and can only be sold, on the network it actually sits on. If your balance looks empty, switch networks before assuming anything is wrong.
  • Gas money. Every sale or transfer is a blockchain transaction, and the fee is paid in that network’s own coin, for example ETH on Ethereum and its layer 2s or BNB on BNB Chain. Keep a small amount of it in the same account, or the transaction cannot be sent.
  • Where you live. Sell providers only pay out in some countries and currencies, and each one supports a different list of tokens. If Sell is greyed out or your token is missing, it is usually a regional or token limitation, not a problem with your wallet.
  • Identity checks. Turning crypto into bank money is regulated almost everywhere. Expect the provider or exchange to ask for ID and proof of address before the first payout.

Method 1: the Sell option inside MetaMask

MetaMask’s mobile app and browser extension include a Sell option (in some versions it sits under Buy & Sell). MetaMask compares quotes from payment providers it works with, which have included companies such as MoonPay, Transak and Banxa, and the provider you pick completes the sale.

  1. Open MetaMask, choose the account that holds the crypto and switch to the network it is on.
  2. Tap Sell, pick the token and enter the amount.
  3. Choose your region and payout method, for example a bank transfer or a debit card.
  4. Compare the quotes. The amount you receive already has the provider’s fee and exchange rate built in, so look at the final payout rather than the headline fee.
  5. Continue to the provider, log in or create an account and complete its identity check.
  6. Confirm the transaction in MetaMask. This sends your crypto to the provider, and you pay the network fee.
  7. Wait for the payout. Card payouts can be fast; bank transfers often take one to five business days, depending on the provider and your bank.

The advantage is convenience: you never leave the wallet to find a buyer. The trade-off is cost, as card and instant payouts usually carry higher fees than selling on an exchange.

Method 2: send to an exchange and sell there

If Sell is not available where you live, or you want a better rate on a larger amount, move the crypto to an exchange account you have already verified.

  1. On the exchange, open Deposit, choose the same token and, crucially, the same network you will send from. Copy the deposit address.
  2. In MetaMask, choose Send, paste the address and check the first and last characters against the exchange screen.
  3. For a first transfer, send a small test amount and wait for it to arrive before sending the rest.
  4. Once credited, sell on the exchange’s spot market for your local currency or a stablecoin.
  5. Withdraw the money to your bank account.

Indian users should use an exchange registered with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND), which is required for exchanges serving Indian customers.

Method 3: swap to a stablecoin first

If the aim is to stop a position falling while you decide what to do, MetaMask’s Swap feature can exchange a volatile token for a dollar-pegged stablecoin such as USDC or USDT without leaving the wallet. MetaMask adds a service fee to swaps, which is shown in the quote alongside the network fee. You can later sell the stablecoin through Method 1 or 2. Remember that a stablecoin is still crypto: it is not money in a bank account, and stablecoins can lose their peg.

What selling costs

Cost Who charges it How to keep it down
Network (gas) fee The blockchain Sell from a layer 2 network where possible; Ethereum mainnet fees rise when the network is busy
Provider or exchange fee MoonPay, Transak, an exchange and so on Compare the final payout, not the advertised percentage
Spread Built into the exchange rate Larger, more liquid tokens have smaller spreads
Payout fee Provider or bank Bank transfers usually cost less than instant card payouts

Mistakes to avoid

  • Wrong network. Sending a token on one network to an address that expects another can mean the funds never arrive. Exchanges sometimes recover them for a fee; often they cannot.
  • Sending to a token contract address. Only send to the deposit address the exchange shows you.
  • Fake support. MetaMask staff will never message you first, and nobody legitimate needs your Secret Recovery Phrase. Anyone who asks for it is trying to empty your wallet.
  • Look-alike websites. Reach the sell flow from inside the MetaMask app, not from a search ad or a link in a message.
  • Forgetting the gas coin. Selling every last ETH leaves nothing to pay for the next transaction, including moving any tokens that remain.

Tax

Selling crypto is usually a taxable event. In India, gains on crypto (virtual digital assets) are taxed at a flat 30% under Section 115BBH with no offset for losses, and a 1% TDS applies to many transfers under Section 194S. In most other countries a sale is treated as a disposal for capital gains tax. Keep a record of what you paid, what you received and the fees on both sides, and check the rules where you live.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell crypto from MetaMask straight to my bank account?

Yes, where MetaMask’s Sell option is available in your country. A third-party provider buys the crypto and sends the money to your bank or card. Elsewhere, send the crypto to an exchange, sell it there and withdraw.

Why is the Sell button greyed out or my token missing?

Sell providers support a limited list of countries, networks and tokens. Switch to the network your token is on; if it still does not appear, use an exchange or swap it first to a token the providers accept.

How long does it take to get paid?

The blockchain transfer usually takes minutes. The bank payout depends on the provider and your bank and commonly takes one to five business days.

Is there a minimum amount?

Each provider sets its own minimum, shown before you confirm. Very small sales are often not worth the fixed network and payout costs.

Is it safe to sell through MetaMask?

The Sell flow connects you to regulated payment providers, but you are still responsible for sending to the right place. Start inside the official app, check every address and never share your recovery phrase.
