Google’s AI Cites Crypto News Sites 4.1x Less Than ChatGPT and Perplexity, New ICODA Study Finds

New research from growth marketing agency ICODA reveals a stark disparity in how AI platforms cite cryptocurrency news outlets, with Google’s AI systems citing the category 4.1 times less often than independent rivals. The study, which analyzed 55,055 AI citations across 40 crypto news domains, found that Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini combined accounted for just 10,728 citations (19.5%), while ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok generated 44,327 citations (80.5%).

The findings land at a moment of heightened tension between publishers and Google. On July 17, 2026, Google’s Senior Vice President of Knowledge and Information, Nick Fox, stated that Google’s AI features in Search send billions of clicks to websites every week. Days later, Alphabet reported $119.8 billion in quarterly revenue, up 24%, with Search advertising climbing 17% to $63.27 billion. That same week, the Wall Street Journal reported that major outlets including USA Today, Politico, Reuters, The Economist, People Inc., and Reddit were weighing whether to block Google’s crawler entirely.

Google’s AI citation gap is not a sampling artifact

ICODA’s analysis shows the citation gap is not evenly distributed. Google’s share of individual domains’ citations ranges from 0% to 55.6%. Forkast.news draws 55.6% of its AI citations from Google, while six other publishers draw none. This variation, the report argues, reflects which domains Google’s systems draw from rather than a limitation of the measurement tool.

Six prominent crypto news publishers received zero citations across all Google AI surfaces: Cointelegraph, cryptodaily.co.uk, CryptoNewsInsights, NewsBTC, The Daily Hodl, and Blockworks. Cointelegraph, which appears in 1,078 AI answers today, holds none from Google. Meanwhile, these same outlets continue to be cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok.

The concentration of citations further illustrates the divide. Google’s five most-cited domains in the category hold 64.1% of everything its AI infrastructure cites; its top ten hold 85.6%. For independent platforms, the same figures are 51.2% and 69.4%, indicating a more distributed citation pattern.

What this means for publishers and the AI search arena

For crypto news sites, the study underscores a growing dependency on non-Google AI platforms for referral visibility. As Google’s AI surfaces become more selective, publishers may need to diversify their AI visibility strategies beyond traditional search optimization.

“Google’s public statements and the publishers’ complaints aren’t actually in conflict: they’re describing different things,” said Anastasia Shalepina, AI SEO specialist at ICODA. “Google reports a numerator with no denominator. What we measured is the denominator’s shape: one in five citations to this category comes from Google’s own AI, and that fifth is distributed as a shortlist, not an index.”

The research also raises questions about the broader publisher-Google relationship. With major outlets considering blocking Google’s crawler, the citation gap could further strain negotiations over content usage and compensation. For crypto media specifically, the data suggests that relying on Google’s AI for traffic may yield diminishing returns compared to engaging with independent AI platforms.

ICODA’s complete report includes the full dataset and per-domain metrics, offering publishers a detailed look at their AI citation footprint. The methodology used Ahrefs organic-traffic data from June 2024 to July 2026, with AI citation counts snapshotted on August 10, 2026.

As AI-powered search continues to evolve, the gap between Google’s citation behavior and that of its competitors may become a defining issue for digital publishers. For now, the data offers a clear signal: crypto news outlets are far more visible in the AI answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok than in Google’s own AI products.
