DogeOS Opens Public Testnet for Dogecoin App Layer

DogeOS opened the public testnet for its Dogecoin application layer on Sept. 30, 2026, giving developers a live environment to build lending protocols, trading venues, prediction markets and games on top of the original meme coin. Transaction fees on the testnet are paid in DOGE. There is no mainnet launch date, according to Decrypt.

The project comes from the team behind the MyDoge wallet and runs as a separate layer rather than altering Dogecoin itself. DogeOS documentation describes it as an “Application Layer rollup network on Dogecoin” running on a zkVM, software that generates cryptographic proofs that transactions are valid. It is EVM-compatible, meaning smart contracts, wallets and tools built for Ethereum work there too. Before this, DogeOS ran as a private testnet with limited access, Cryptobriefing reported.

Key facts

  • DogeOS opened its public testnet on Sept. 30, 2026, with fees paid in DOGE and a faucet distributing 42.069 test DOGE per day.
  • Building teams include Superposition Finance (lending), Derps (perpetual exchange), USDoge (a CDP stablecoin), Snag (a prediction market aggregator), Barkswap (a liquidity engine), Split Markets (non-liquidatable options), and game publishers PlaysOut, Doge Escape and DogeFundMe, plus launchpads from Anoncoin and Starbase.
  • DogeOS announced a $6.9 million funding round led by Polychain Capital in May 2025, Crypto.news reported.
  • The DogeOS team submitted the OP_CHECKZKP proposal to Dogecoin Core on July 22, 2025, seeking native zero-knowledge proof verification; it has not been implemented.
  • Bitwise scheduled the closure of its U.S. Dogecoin ETF, BWOW, with trading and new share creation stopping before the market opens on Oct. 15, per Crypto.news.

How DogeOS is secured today

Under the current design described by CEO Jordan Jefferson, bridge state transitions require valid proofs, signatures from a majority of the validator set, and a signer operating within a trusted execution environment, Crypto.news reported. The network also uses a permissioned sequencer. That means the base Dogecoin layer does not verify the rollup’s zero-knowledge proofs itself.

The proposed fix is a Dogecoin Core change that would let miners verify execution proofs directly. Because Dogecoin has no formal on-chain governance, Decrypt noted, such a change would need contributor review, community discussion, security audits and miners signaling support. Cryptobriefing placed the OP_CHECKZKP submission date at July 22, 2025. Decrypt dated the same proposal only to July 2025 and did not name it.

What the launch does and does not change

Jefferson framed the milestone as a shift in what Dogecoin is: “Today marks the beginning of Dogecoin’s evolution from asset to ecosystem,” he said. Timothy Stebbing, a director of the Dogecoin Foundation, said the ambition is for startup activity rather than a count of firms already operating on DogeOS. In a statement carried by Decrypt, he said L1 ledger purity must stay intact while utility is introduced one layer above.

Crypto.news quoted him differently: “I’ve spent half a decade encouraging people to take a chance on Dogecoin and to build in its ecosystem,” Stebbing said. “My hopes are that DogeOS becomes the springboard for a wave of new utility engineering, the gateway for the next 100 startups to build on Dogecoin.”

DogeOS cautioned that application availability and features depend on each team’s development schedule. Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency, traded near $83,772 on the day, down 0.93% over 24 hours, per Decrypt’s market module.

Why it matters

Dogecoin was created in 2013 by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus as a joke and works as a peer-to-peer digital currency, yet it has become a multi-billion dollar network. If apps on DogeOS gain users, every transaction would require DOGE for gas, potentially creating demand tied to usage rather than tipping, memes or payments. A public testnet is a rehearsal: testnet tokens carry no real value, and activity there does not guarantee users or capital arrive once a mainnet exists.

What to watch

The concrete near-term data points are the Dogecoin Core review of OP_CHECKZKP and any mainnet timeline from Jefferson, who said the team will share one as it reaches the next development milestones. For U.S. holders, Bitwise’s BWOW fund stops trading before the open on Oct. 15, with cash distributed around Oct. 22 based on the fund’s Oct. 21 net asset value. Bitcoin’s price and DOGE’s market mood are volatile and hard to predict; nothing here is financial advice.
