Bitdeer Signs $4.7B Deal to Turn Norway Bitcoin Mine Into AI Data Center
Bitdeer Technologies has signed a 16-year, $4.7 billion lease agreement with Volta Tydal AS to convert its Norway Bitcoin mining facility into a large-scale artificial intelligence and high-performance computing (HPC) data center, the company announced on August 4, 2026. The deal sent Bitdeer’s stock up 23% as investors welcomed the company’s pivot toward AI infrastructure.
The agreement transforms the Tydal, Norway site from a crypto mining operation into a 121-megawatt (MW) AI campus, powered entirely by renewable hydropower. The project will use advanced NVIDIA GPUs, with Dell Technologies providing the core hardware infrastructure. The facility is expected to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of around 1.1, positioning it among Europe’s most energy-efficient AI data centers.

From Bitcoin Mining to AI Infrastructure

Bitdeer will retain ownership of the property while earning steady lease income over the initial 16-year term. If Volta exercises its option to extend for another eight years, the total contract value could reach $8 billion. The company expects an average lease rate of about $202 per kilowatt per month and projects a 90% net operating income margin, with electricity costs fully covered by the tenant.
Chief Financial Officer Michael G. Potter called the agreement “a key milestone in Bitdeer’s evolution as a global AI infrastructure platform,” adding that the project will help bring large-scale AI infrastructure to Norway and Europe.

The move follows Bitdeer’s announcement last month of a $36 million investment in a Nevada facility to produce its own mining hardware, reducing reliance on external suppliers. The company is part of a growing trend of Bitcoin miners repurposing their energy infrastructure for AI workloads, which offer more predictable revenue than the volatile mining market.
Financial Backing and Construction Timeline
Volta’s financial commitments are secured by approximately $1.3 billion in letters of credit arranged through J.P. Morgan and another major global financial institution. Volta recently emerged from stealth with a $2.4 billion valuation, backed by investors including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), NVIDIA, Altimeter, and Azora.
Construction will proceed in two phases:
- Phase one: Expected by December 31, 2026
- Phase two: Expected by March 31, 2027
The campus will also recycle excess heat from the data center to support nearby agricultural operations, a design feature that underscores the project’s sustainability credentials.
Why This Deal Matters for the Crypto Mining Sector
Bitdeer’s pivot reflects a broader industry shift as Bitcoin miners seek stable income streams beyond block rewards. Long-term AI infrastructure leases provide predictable cash flow, reducing exposure to Bitcoin price swings and mining difficulty adjustments. The deal also validates the value of miners’ existing power infrastructure, which is increasingly scarce and expensive to build.
Industry observers note that similar conversions are likely as more miners recognize the financial advantages of hosting AI workloads. The combination of renewable energy, existing grid connections, and scalable land makes mining sites attractive for AI data center operators facing power constraints elsewhere.
For Bitdeer, the agreement provides a clear path to revenue diversification while maintaining ownership of its physical assets. The company’s stock rally following the announcement suggests investors see the AI pivot as a positive long-term strategy, though the success of the project will depend on timely construction and Volta’s ability to meet its financial commitments.
With phase one targeted for the end of 2026, Bitdeer is positioning itself to capitalize on the growing demand for AI computing capacity in Europe, a region where energy costs and regulatory hurdles have slowed data center development.
