Bank of Montreal Discloses Small XRP ETF Position in Latest SEC Filing
Bank of Montreal (BMO) disclosed a modest position in XRP-linked exchange-traded funds in its latest quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, marking another step in the gradual entry of traditional financial institutions into the digital asset space.
The filing, submitted on August 12, 2026, shows the bank held 323 shares of the REX-Osprey XRP ETF valued at $2,771, along with 20 shares of the ProShares Ultra XRP ETF worth $199, for a combined value of $2,970. Both positions were held through Stoker Ostler Wealth Advisors, a Bank of Montreal-controlled investment adviser.

Institutional Interest in XRP Products

The disclosure covers holdings as of June 30, 2026, and represents a tiny fraction of Bank of Montreal’s total reported portfolio of $303.65 billion. While the dollar amount is negligible relative to the bank’s overall assets, the inclusion of XRP-linked products in a major Canadian bank’s U.S. regulatory filing reflects the growing acceptance of crypto ETFs among institutional investors.
The REX-Osprey XRP ETF and the ProShares Ultra XRP ETF are among the newer crypto-linked products that have emerged following the SEC’s approval of spot XRP ETFs earlier in the year. These products provide regulated exposure to XRP without requiring investors to hold the underlying asset directly.

It is worth noting that a 13F filing has limitations. It does not show short positions, direct cryptocurrency holdings, or transactions made after the reporting date. Therefore, the filing provides only a partial picture of Bank of Montreal’s overall crypto exposure.
What This Means for the Market
The disclosure, while small in scale, adds to a growing pattern of traditional financial institutions testing the waters with digital asset products. Since the approval of spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs in 2024, and the subsequent expansion into XRP and other altcoin ETFs, institutional participation has increased steadily.
For XRP holders, the involvement of a major bank like BMO—even at a minimal level—could be seen as a positive signal for the asset’s legitimacy. However, it is important to keep the numbers in perspective: a $2,970 position is unlikely to move markets or indicate a major strategic shift by the bank.
Observers will be watching upcoming 13F filings from other major financial institutions to see whether similar small positions in crypto ETFs become more common. The next round of filings, due in November, will provide further clarity on institutional appetite for XRP-linked products.
